George Gemunder 1816-1899 (born in Ingelfingen, Germany) is considered to be one of the finest
Violin Makers.
He studied violin making under his father and apprenticed with and
worked for J. B. Vuillaume in Paris from 1843 - 1847. He moved to the United States in 1847
and established his own shop in Boston. Circa 1852 he moved to New York and established his
own shop in Astoria in 1874.
He placed first at the World Fair in London in 1851 and also received first place
at the Vienna Exposition in 1873 as well as the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876.
He specialized in making exact copies of the great Cremonese masters, and attained the
reputation of "America's greatest maker."
