PRESERVATION ISSUE
Parsonage, St. George Episcopal Church of Astoria

The parsonage of St. George's Episcopal Church today was originally the Astoria Institute (1828). Stephen Halsey suggested the name Astoria, hoping that John Jacob Astor, who lived across the East River in Yorkville, would give his namesake money. A delegation visited Astor and requested $2,000 for the institute, but they got only $500. The grateful community of Hallet's Cove renamed itself Astoria Village. The school was later the Astoria Female Seminary in 1844. This building was the namesake of Astoria.

The parish did not have a full time minister. The Episcopal Church targeted the building for a 60 unit senior housing and destroyed the parsonage several years ago. The project may have encroached on a 19th century cemetery but a few feet from the property.
