OVER DEVELOPMENT

April 24, 2006

Robert B. Tierney, Chair
NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission
One Centre Street, 9th Floor
New York, New York 10007

Dear Mr. Tierney:

I would like to request that the Landmarks Commission reconsider their decision not to declare St. Savior’s Church in Maspeth and surrounding property a landmark.

This structure and parcel of land is considered by residents of the greater Maspeth community to be of great historical value.

Maspeth is the oldest of Long Island’s colonial sites. It was settled in 1642 by British colonists led by the Reverend Francis Doughty.

Most of Maspeth’s historic landmarks have disappeared. DeWitt Clinton’s house (built circa 1725) burned in 1933. The two remaining buildings from our past are St. Savior’s Church (constructed in 1847), and Maspeth Town Hall (built in 1897, formerly known as Brinkerhoff School), serving today as Maspeth’s Community Center. It is indeed very sad that this building, one of the last two remaining historical sites, cannot receive landmark designation and will have to face the wrecking ball.

I ask you please to reconsider your decision.

Sincerely,

Margaret Markey

Member of Assembly
