Acclaimed Local Historian Looks at "New York: Year
By Year"
Dr. Jeffrey Kroessler Discusses New Book "New York: Year by Year-A
Chronology of the Great Metropolis"; Book Signing to Follow Lecture
If any city deserves a complete chronology, it is surely New York. In
his new book "New York: Year by Year-A Chronology of the Great Metropolis,"
Astoria-based historian Dr. Jeffrey Kroessler delivers just that, offering
up a cornucopia of the familiar and forgotten, the historic and the ephemeral,
the heroic and the banal. Kroessler will discuss his new tome at a special
lecture and book signing sponsored by the Greater Astoria Historical Society
on Monday, May 5th, starting at 7 pm. In observance of Steinways &
Son's 150th Anniversary, Dr. Kroessler will present his lecture at Steinway
Reformed Church, 41-01 Ditmars Boulevard, instead of Quinn's Gallery at
GAHS.
"There are few people in the world with as much knowledge about
the intimate details of the history of New York than our friend, Dr. Jeffrey
Kroessler," said Bob Singleton, president of GAHS. "And indeed,
there's no place more fitting for Dr. Kroessler to discuss his book than
the Steinway Reformed Church, an 1891 Gothic revival gem with a pipe organ
contributed by William Steinway."
In his handy new reference book, Dr. Kroessler takes readers from Verrazano's
arrival in 1524 into the new millennium, highlighting the strikes and
stikeouts, tunnels and towers, personalities and parades which not only
made history in New York, but also proved to be the defining moments for
the nation.
