On Monday, May 7, at 7:30 PM, the Greater Astoria Historical Society
presents Golden Age of the Motion Picture Palace - New York City
and Long Island a slide lecture presentation by Orlando Lopes and
Joan Lengyel, members of the Theatre Historical Society of America. Come
to the entertaining and informative lecture taking a nostalgic look at
movie theaters form the1920's to the present. View also the "Marquee
Collection" an exhibit of artwork and memorabilia by Joan Lengyel.
The program looks at the exteriors and interiors of movie 20th Century
movie palaces, and discusses the stars, films and studios that made up
this art form that defined an entire generation of entertainment. The
innovations in film, sound, color 3-D and Cinemascope are also examined.
Orlando Lopes, a 20 year theatre manger, is one of the foremost movie
buffs and avid collectors of movie and theater memorabilia in the country.
He has logged thousands of miles in pursuit of his hobby, and has given
scores of lectures on the subject on TV and in person. Joan is a Long
Island artist whose portfolio of sketches has captured the essence of
the Main Street theater across America.
