The Greater Astoria Historical Society’s Annual Holiday Party will take place at 7 p.m. on Monday December 5, 2005. A special lecture "Toon Town: Comics Books and New York City will be presented by noted author and social science professor Dr. Kent Worcester. Joining in the holiday festivities that evening will be Astoria’s own "Saw Lady" Natalia Paruz playing a few selections from her Christmas CD and the Golliard Singers caroling the entrance of the holiday season.
The modern comic book industry was created in 1930’s and 1940’s and was heavily concentrated in one city: New York. Even today, the largest comic book companies remain based in Manhattan and popular comic book stories are often set in the city’s streetscapes. Dr. Kent Worcester will present a slide lecture documenting the phenomena as well as the oversized characters in these stories.
This program is made possible through a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities. Since its launch in 1983, the Council’s Speakers in the Humanities program has linked distinguished scholars with a diverse audience through the presentation of lectures on a broad range of topics. All Speakers events are free to the public.
