THE Greater Astoria Historical Society Quinn's Gallery (4th Floor), 35-20 Broadway, Long Island City, N. Y.
The Queens Chronicle, in their Queens Spotlight, called the Society’s Lecture Series "one of the best kept secrets in Queens!"
Our audience is drawn from around the city, and our pool of lectures are from around the country. The "Long Island City Forum" offers a premium venue at popular prices. Lectures are free to members and still only $5.00 to guests.
As a sample of our fare, one evening you might see the Bronx Borough Historian Lloyd Ultan talk of the American Revolution, or you might find yourself listening to eductor Dr. Jeffrey Kroessler discussing problems in writing good history, or perhaps you will be at a lively Town Meeting where elected officials, civic leaders and developers debate the merits of community preservation.
Past themes include lectures on:
The Gardens of Queens
New York City Centennial: Five Boroughs, Three Towns, One City
The Twentieth Century: Decade by Decade
The Hidden Gems of New York
Last year, we featured an impressive lineup:
The Beer Gardens of Queens: Pork, Pilsner, and Polkas
Sono Bono: The Story of the Ronzoni Family
The Ice Age in Queens
The Sinking of HMS Husar in the Hell Gate
The Man in the Red Flannel Shirt: Astoria’s Pat Falci as General A. P. Hill
This year, our theme is "Long Island City Visions." We might Spend Chistmas with Clement Clark Moore in Queens, or perhaps listen to leading Queens Genelogist Patty Fagan talk about Nineteenth Century and the Irish-American in Astoria.
Now we can’t tell you all, but we promise it will be our usual eclectic series!
The Society receives requests to sponsor lecturers in schools, libraries, and service, social or civic organizations throughout our community and the borough of Queens.
