At 3rd Avenue and 110th Street, a smart fisherman could take home several fish an hour while fishing off a bridge over the Harlem Meer, a creek off the Harlem River. A nearby reef in Hell Gate, called Hog's Back, was considered one of the great spots in New York for bass as they would congregate by the rock rubbing their backs on it as they fed. (Courtesy GAHS)
Jones’s Wood extended from the East River to Third Avenue between 66th Street and 75th Street. It attracted church groups and private clubs for outings with its beer saloons, dance halls and bowling alleys. Although suggested as a site for Central Park, local residents argued they did not want a large park in their neighborhood. The city’s growth led to the area’s demise in the 1890s. (Courtesy GAHS)
