The dictionary defines “stevedore” as derived from Spanish estivador, meaning ‘to stow or cram or to stuff objects.’ Stevedores, whose occupation was to stow goods in a ship’s hold, loaded and unloaded vessels in New York port. They were skilled in handling everything from heavy, bulk goods, to delicate tropical fruits. (Courtesy GAHS)
