The Astoria community has embraced the Hell Gate Bridge as its own. Here, the bridge was under construction in September 1915 When the arch sections met, they were out of alignment only 5/16ths of an inch. , can stand the weight of 40 locomotives. It is the world’s longest four-track rail bridge. Engineers boast that with regular coats of paint, it can last as long as the pyramids. (Courtesy Robert Singleton)
The subway reached Brooklyn on January 9, 1908 winning a race with the PATH tubes to New Jersey by one month. Although the cast iron rings look solid, a worker was sucked through the roof during a ‘blow-out’ in 1905. Miraculously, he survived being pulled through the riverbed and being shot to the surface where the astonished crew of a tug picked him up. (Courtesy GAHS)
