Chapter 3 Living on the River, Page 40
Once called “Steamship Row,” State Street was home to counting house merchants. This was considered the finest block of homes on Manhattan. A system of signals from a tower on Staten Island, visible from their windows, gave information on that day’s arriving ships, advance intelligence that was used to their advantage. Later these buildings became offices for various steamship companies. (Courtesy Thomas Jackson)
The Brevoort estate, between 54th and 55th Streets near First Avenue, was about to be engulfed by the developing city c. 1865. The Youle Shot Tower (background), built around 1830, made buckshot pellets by dropping molten metal through a screen at the top. The droplets cooled after falling into a pool of water at its base. It stood until 1907 (Courtesy Thomas Jackson)
