IMAGES OF AMERICA: THE EAST RIVER
Chapter 1 Natural Features, Page 17
This is a view (ca. 1777) looking northeast from a bluff just inside Central Park near the Block House. Beyond the Harlem plain are Wards and Randalls Islands. To the left is Morrisania in the Bronx, and in the distance, the Hell Gate and Long Island. It gives a good idea of the original state of the upper East River. (Courtesy GAHS)
The Bronx River is the only true river in the five boroughs of New York City. It flows from Westchester County through the Bronx into the East River. With a fisherman in a boat, the crystal clear stream, one can almost hear a dragonfly buzzing over the water to complete this late nineteenth century gem. (Courtesy GAHS)
